Riparian Revegetation And Streambank Stabilization Techniques Workshop

Riparian Revegetation And Streambank Stabilization Techniques Workshop

Fred Phillips Consulting and Oxbow Ecological Engineering provided a workshop on Riparian Revegetation and Stream Bank Stabilization Techniques for the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. The first day of the workshop provided an introduction to alternative stream stabilization techniques using soil bioengineering. It included a review of traditional streambank stabilization techniques, the river system, river stability, and riparian areas and presented a “Streambank Soil Bioengineering Toolbox”. There was also be a discussion of implementation of these techniques in an urban setting.

The second day covered planting design strategies and the harvesting, propagation, planting, and maintenance of native riparian vegetation. This included a toolbox of best management practices for implementing riparian revegetation projects and covered case studies for projects in urban, rural, and wilderness settings. This workshop also involved discussion of design and construction considerations in building the project. The final portion of the workshop was dedicated to implementing the pilot project techniques taught in lectures in a hands-on field demonstration.
